Directions: To explore the world of Transportation and the Magnetic Levitation phenomenon. In this module, you will explore the history of Transportation and the working of Magnets. It will give you the experience of what it may be like to travel on a magnetic levitation system or will it become science fiction. You will be designing a magnetic levitation vehicle that will travel down a 10' track.
This module contains several lessons and the assessment of the student’s progress. Complete all worksheets, take a photo of your final working project, and place your work in your Technology Engineering portfolio.
  1. Locate and read "Technology in Action", read pg. 465 - 466.

  2. Locate and read the articles - from the Peninsula Daily News - take notes. Save notes to your portfolio.

  3. Locate and complete all of the lessons and worksheets within the Mag-Lev Module.

  4. View the power point presentation on Magnetic Levitation - take notes for future reference.

  5. Locate the the "Reed" folder in SMS Share; locate the tech lab, locate Energy, then locate "Magnetic Levitation". Take notes to answer any essential questions.

  6. Locate the video on Mag-Lev. Use the video to help prepare you for the completion of the Mag-Lev. project.

  7. Locate the track and notice the width of the track. When making your thumbnail sketches, make sure that the sketches fit the track.

  8. Complete the "thumbnail sketch sheet" - make 3 different views of the Mag-Lev. Vehicle, save them to your portfolio.

  9. Locate the Magnetic Levitation Vehicle Kit from the instructor.

  10. Begin on the construction of the Magnetic Levitation Vehicle kit.

  11. Make sure the magnets are placed as close to the edge as possible. They must repel the magnet on the track.

  12. Complete the construction phase, and begin the testing phase.

  13. Complete the “Magnetic Levitation vehicle testing and the evaluation sheet”. Save it to your portfolio.

  14. Work to complete the performance of this vehicle and make final adjustments for the final test day.

  15. If your vehicle is not performing - locate the Fact Sheet #5 and use it to problem solve your problem.

  16. Take a Digital Photo and place in your portfolio.

  17. Utilize the completion of all lessons and worksheets to discuss the completion of the module with the instructor.
