Fictional Summary
The short story “Diagnosis of Death” by Ambrose Bierce takes place in the study of a Pennsylvanian physician by the name of Frayley. Dr. Frayley is meeting with a nervous and upset patient by the name of Hawver. Hawver claims to have seen the apparition, or ghost, of a legendary psychiatrist believed to have the ability to diagnose (predict) a person’s death. Hawver is convinced the ghost is a bad omen. The day after sharing his story with Frayley, Hawver dies.
